Description
The Momella Lakes (also Momela Lakes) are a series of smaller lakes in the Arusha National Park in Tanzania . They are located in the northeast of the national park and are only partially filled year round with water. The Momella lakes are alkaline and salty. They are mainly fed by groundwater and are characterized by a high fluorine content .
The Momella lakes are among others
- Great Momella Lake
- Little Momella Lake
- Rishateni Lake
- Tulusia Lake
- Lekandiro Lake
- Kekhotoito Lake
- Kusare Lake
Origin
The lakes were formed when about 6000 years ago, a violent eruption of Mount Meru , similar to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 , collapsed the eastern wall of the crater and a stream of water, mud and stones poured into the steppe to the east. Another collapse of the Caldera , 1800 years later, changed the course of the river that fed the lakes and isolated all the lakes, except the Little Momella Lake.
Animals
Thousands of flamingos live on the lakes, which can sometimes turn the shallow water into pink. The Momella Lakes feed on a variety of native and migratory waterfowl.
